Coconut regains tree status in Goa as Assembly passes bill. The Goa Legislative Assembly has passed a bill which reclassifies coconut as a tree ensuring legal protection for it. The Assembly, on the last day of Monsoon session on 7 August 2017, passed the Goa, Daman and Diu, Preservation of Trees Act, 1984 to regulate felling of coconut trees.

 

Indian Philanthropist Firoz Merchant honoured by UAE Government. Firoz Merchant, an Indian businessman in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) spent over USD 4 million to help free prisoners languishing in jails due to non-payment of debts honored with UAE’s prestigious Community Service Medal.

 

Justice Dipak Misra to be next Chief Justice of India. The incumbent Chief Justice of India Jagdish Singh Khehar will demit office on August 27.

After 130 years, government decides to shut down all 39 military farms. The Ministry of Defence has asked the Army to shut down these farms by October end. The decision to close down the farms are part of the exercise to make the Indian Army more lean and nimble reducing the non-combat component of the force.

Now, researchers from Kanazawa University in Japan claim to have found a way to maintain the shape of ice cream by increasing its melting point. The government has formed a committee in its bid to make drugs more affordable in the country, Parliament was informed on Tuesday. “Government has constituted a committee of joint secretaries for ensuring enhanced affordability, availability and accessibility of drugs for the citizens,” minister of state for chemicals and fertilisers Mansukh L Mandaviya said in a written reply to Lok Sabha.
