T R Zeliang appointed as Chief Minister of Nagaland by Governor PB Acharya. It is the second term for Zeliang, his earlier term was from 2014 to 2017. He was asked to prove his majority on the floor of the House on or before 22 July 2017.

 

US imposes new sanctions against Iran over ballistic missile program. The United States has imposed new economic sanctions against Iran over its ballistic missile programme and for contributing to regional tensions.

 

Don’t discriminate between soldiers injured in pre & post-independence wars: Armed Forces Tribunal. The Armed Forces Tribunal has ordered that troopers injured in pre-Independence wars be given ‘war injury pension’ like those wounded after it, in a relief to a 94-year-old war veteran.

 

United States Navy tests world’s first Laser Weapons System. The United States Navy recently tested the world’s first-ever active laser weapons system, which is now deployed and ready for war. Each strike travels 50,000 times the speed of an incoming intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM). In the test, the system was able to destroy a drone in flight and moving targets in the Persian Gulf. With its addition, USS Ponce becomes the first ship in the world to be deployed with such an advanced weapons system.

 

Supreme Court allows Centre to replace MCI oversight committee. The Supreme Court has allowed the Union Government to replace the oversight committee set up to supervise the functioning of the Medical Council of India (MCI) with a fresh panel of five eminent doctors.

 

Maharashtra government approves revised policy of scheme to improve girl child ratio. The Maharashtra government on 18 July 2017 approved a revised policy of the ‘Majhi Kanya Bhagyashree’ scheme in an attempt to improve girl child ratio in the state.

 

Australia and USA jointly launched multimillion hypersonic missile HIFiRE. The United States of America and Australia have jointly test-fired a hypersonic missile Hypersonic International Flight Research Experimentation Program (HIFiRE) capable of moving at a speed eight times faster than sound as part of a $54-million research project.

 

Underwater ghost nets posing threat to marine ecosystem. According to recent study, ghost nets (abandoned, lost or dumped fishing nets) have emerged as the greatest killers of the marine ecosystem off Kerala coast. These ghost notes may have long-term implications for marine life if no proper correctives are taken to deal with them. It may become major threat to the natural habitat and breeding ground of underwater fish.

 

Nine-judge bench to decide whether privacy is a fundamental right. The formation of the nine-judge Bench seeks to bring an end to contradictory judicial pronouncements of the past on the issue of the right to privacy.

 

Indians among top asylum-seekers according to the International Migration Outlook 2017. According to the International Migration Outlook 2017 report on Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) member countries Indians are among top asylum-seekers in other countries such as New Zealand, Australia, Finland, Japan, Latvia, Slovak Republic, United Kingdom and the United States of America.

 

TR Zeliang sworn in as 19th Chief Minister of Nagaland. Senior Naga People’s Front (NPF) legislator TR Zeliang (65) was sworn in as the 19th chief minister of Nagaland. He was administered oath to office and secrecy by Governor P.B. Acharya.

 

Researchers from IISER Kolkata develop flame-proof, rust-resistant material. Researchers at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Kolkata, have developed an organic-inorganic hybrid material which is water, fire and rust resistant.

 

Bharat Arun appointed Team India Bowling Coach. Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) appointed Bharat Arun as the Indian Cricket team’s bowling coach. Sanjay Bangar as an assistant coach and R Sridhar as fielding coach till the 2019 ODI World Cup. Ravi Shastri is the newly appointed coach of Indian Cricket team.

 

UIDAI launches mAadhaar app for Aadhaar data on phone. The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has launched ‘mAadhaar’, a new mobile application for syncing Aadhaar data on mobile phones. The app allows users to carry their unique Aadhaar information including name, date of birth, gender, address, and the linked photograph, on their smartphones. The app also allows users to lock or unlock biometrics data.

 

UK’s first woman Sikh MP Preet Kaur Gill elected to Home Affairs Select Committee. Preet Kaur Gill, who won the Edgbaston seat for the Labour party in the 8 June 2017 snap general election, was elected to the Home Affairs Select Committee in the UK Parliament. She will be one of 11 MPs on the cross-party home affairs committee.

 

New species of bird-like dinosaur identified in Canada. Canadian scientists identified a new bird-like species of dinosaur that lived nearly 71 million years ago. The species was found in Alberta, has been named in honour of famous Canadian palaeontologist Philip J. Currie. It has been named as the Albertavenatorcurriei, which means Currie’s, Alberta Hunter.

 

Cabinet approves MOC in respect of tax matters between India and BRICS countries. The Union Cabinet has approved signing of Memorandum of Cooperation (MOC) in respect of tax matters between India and the BRICS countries namely, Brazil, Russia, China and South Africa.

 

India launches solar project to electrify remote village of Agaween in Egypt. The project was inaugurated by India’s Ambassador to Egypt Sanjay Bhattacharyya and Major General Alla Fathi Abou Zeid, Governor of Matrouh.

 

Union Government launches low-cost screening device SOHUM to detect congenital hearing loss in newborns. Ministry of Science and Technology launched Sohum Hearing Screening device, a low-cost indigenous screening device to detect a congenital hearing loss in newborns. The device was formally launched in New Delhi by the Minister of State for Science and Technology YS Chowdary.

 

Union Cabinet approves draft bills to replace GST ordinances for J&K. The Union Cabinet approved promulgation of the Central Goods and Services Tax (Extension to Jammu & Kashmir) Ordinance, 2017 and Integrated Goods and Services Tax (Extension to Jammu & Kashmir) Ordinance, 2017.

 

Telangana government puts cap on weight of school bags. The Telangana government has imposed a cap on the weight of bags carried by schoolchildren in order to prevent any resulting physical effect and anxiety disorder in students.
